Wiggle - Day 2,350

After a misty start to our day, this afternoon we got our walk in before the sun was setting.

Wiggle did plenty of sniffing:

And pottered about off-lead:

Sofy was on her best behaviour, sitting nicely in case there were any treats coming her way:

Stopping at the bench:

This evening Wiggle and Sofy were very helpful, testing the Gingerbread Men that I made.  They didn't complain!

Now though, time to relax:

Happy Thanksgiving!

For a while now I have been noticing that Wiggle is showing his age and slowing down.  Although this time of year gives us less opportunities for long walks without getting cold, wet or both, Wiggle has been less active.

He has more grey on his face and paws and his eyes are starting to get cloudy and his joints are more stiff but despite old age, Wiggle still loves his cuddles and playing with his toys and enjoys coming to work with me every fortnight to then do our Pets As Therapy visits in the evening.

I am truly thankful for the time Wiggle has been with me, for all the fun things we've done together and the friends we have made.  He still loves to curl up on the sofa with me and shows his cheeky side, giving me a questioning look if he thinks he is due a treat.

Of course I'm hoping that Wiggle is here with me for a long time yet as he is such a special, affectionate, easy going boy and I love him more than words can say but for now, I'm thankful for each and every day with Wiggle.

The Cornucopia or Horn of Plenty
Thanksgiving is not only about food, despite what the advertisers would have you believe. For me, giving thanks for a bountiful life is more than the food on my table; I need more than food to complete me. Family, travel, good health, physical activity and the love of others are all a part of the complex nature of a healthy person.

My dogs, our doga practice, a healthy diet, and a thriving family life bring my world full circle. I'm taking a few days off to enjoy my whole family, here for the holiday weekend. As I do so, if you're here looking for some reading, I'll leave you with a few carefully chosen articles on holiday topics, to help you nourish your own Thanksgiving:

Finally, don't forget to visit the Fido's Freebie Friday giveaways that run 24/7/365. You'll find all sorts of great goodies there that are just waiting to be won by you!

Happy Thanksgiving,

How Much Food Does Your Dog Need?

by Carrie Boyko, CEB

© AllThingsDogBlog.com
Recently I had the opportunity to learn a bit about the recommended amount of food that is listed on all dog food bags. This is a topic I had never heard much about, and one that seems cut and dried. Surprisingly, it’s not!

Pet food manufacturers list on their bags an average amount of food required for dogs of several weight ranges. It’s important for you to know that these amounts are only a starting point for you to experiment with. To determine what your pup’s ideal amount of food is, you need a couple of important pieces of information:

  • Weigh your dog and get a physical to get started with this process. Your veterinarian can advise you of a healthy weight range for your particular pet. At this appointment, you’ll want to be prepared to share your dog’s daily routine including his activity level, daily mental activity (training and brain games he may engage in), exercise specifics, along with the amount of training treats and other non-meal snacks that your dog gets daily. All this information will play into your vet’s advice.
  • Another important fact that your vet may wish to have available is your dog’s food brand. Bring along the nutrition information  and ingredient list from the label to assist your dog’s doctor in evaluating his or her needs. Based on your dog’s age, breed, current weight and other facts, your vet should be able to give you a better idea of where to start with his daily food allowance.
  • After getting this starting point, try to drop in at least every 2 weeks (more often is better) to weigh your dog. This information will help a ton in determining if you’re on the right track, allowing you to modify Fido’s allowance before he loses or gains an appreciable amount of weight.
You’ll also want to track any changes in his activity level, training time (brain work burns calories!), and extra snacks. If you’re feeding too many between-meal treats you’ll  quickly notice that this is adding to his waistline. Most dogs require only a few small treats each day to reward for extra special behaviors.

Tanner and Oliver, who each have very different jobs, probably get more treats than the average dog may require. Since they do a lot of photo work, posing, store visits, dog park visits and travel, they probably get an average of 3-6 very small ‘thank you’ treats each day. Were they not working for a living, I’m guessing they might only be getting a couple of treats on average, possibly for performing behaviors that are not generally asked of them, or for an energy burst when we enjoy more than the average amount of exercise.

If your dog is in need of dropping a few pounds, your vet will probably suggest you look at the weight management food to aid in this weight loss goal. You can also accelerate the process by gradually building up your dog’s activity. This needn’t be a sudden increase. You can simply begin by adding an additional 5 minutes to his walk or including a vigorous backyard fetch game each afternoon. As you build on this, you should find that your dog’s weight will begin to move downward on the scales. That’s going to be good news to you and your dog, as he’s sure to live a longer life and enjoy it more when he’s active and enjoying a strong bond with you.

Adapting Your Knees-to-Chest Doga

by Carrie Boyko, CEB

 photo KneestoChestModCollageW_zps4af245e5.jpg
Finally we're cooling down with the Knees to Chest pose, while still making sure we don't overdo. It's always good to view the short video instruction at the link, to assure that you follow Jess's simple tips for each pose. Links to all the Doga videos may be found here.

Whether you're able to bring your knees toward your chest at all, or can place them atop your chest, either is right as long as you're feeling good while you do it. This gentle stretch should awaken and relax the glutes and hamstrings, while flattening the lower back against the mat for a nice rest after your practice. If you find it stressful to remove your feet from the mat, try resting them on the seat bottom of a chair for the simplest of moves in the right direction.

Relaxing Into a Snug Ball
After you invite your dogs to join you, enjoy a few breaths to truly rest your core once you have pulled your knees in as far as they can comfortably go. Pay attention to your body's messages, watching for progress each time you practice this pose. Pssst....the more you relax, the more your dogs will enjoy participating. :)

I rarely close my eyes during yoga, but during these poses that position my head and body completely on the floor, I can do this without worry of dizziness. It feels so refreshing and relaxing to focus on how each part of my body has reacted to a practice when I take this time for myself.

Tanner and Oliver often get curious when my eyes are closed and I'm not speaking to them. Suddenly I'll feel a nose tickle or a soft sniff at my cheek or hands as Tanner tries to figure out what I'm up to.

Oliver's reaction is very different. Because he is a Medical Alert dog for me, his immediate assumption is that he I may have needed an alert. After all, I'm on the ground! His sniff of choice at these moments is always to check on the scent eminating from an orifice--usually ears, nose or mouth. He assesses my situation and then when nothings appears to be amiss, he returns to watch me from his position nearby. I hope that these positive experiences are continuing to build his confidence that yoga is a good thing for me, as well as for him. We continue to form a stronger bond with each practice.

Join us again for the Weekly Wag each Saturday, when I share tips and inspiration on bonding more deeply with your dog. Sometimes these posts involve Doga, while others may take us in a very different direction. Got an idea you'd like me to explore in our Weekly Wag? I'd love to hear from you. The comment link is always open!

If you're new to Doga or Yoga, please be sure to do these three things: (1) Get your doctor's permission to start this or any other workout, (2) Check with your vet to make sure your dog is able to participate in simple Doga exercises safely, and (3) visit our introductory post where I've outlined a few tips that will help your experience go more smoothly and enjoyable. Keep in mind that you can always stop if a pose is uncomfortable, returning to a more relaxing pose for you.

#FidosFreebieFriday Decks the Halls

by Carrie Boyko, CEB
With our whole immediate family is joining us for Thanksgiving, there is much to give thanks for this year. I'm all abuzz with preparations here, cleaning, cooking, shopping, and squeezing some yoga in with Tanner and Oliver--aka #doga. This practice was begun about this time last year, and has now grown to be a healthy part of my routine.

Although my practice is still broken into short bursts each day, I'm finding it helps me in so many ways, not the least of which is my relationship with the dogs. Even Jacque, who spends time here on a regular basis, is beginning to join in occasionally, even if only to sniff the treat bag or check up on Tanner and Oliver's involvement.

Pop quiz: Which Papillon in the photo below is Jacque? Guess with your comments.

Where's Mom? It's Time for Doga Practice.
